Colombia FA condemns threats and demands immediate action

Colombia, riding a two-game winning streak and a 3W-1D-0L run in their last four matches (WWDW), condemned on Friday the threats against Jáminton Campaz and his family following their World Cup 2026 elimination by Switzerland. The Colombian Football Federation (FCF) called the incidents unacceptable and urged the Attorney General's Office to act swiftly to identify and prosecute those responsible.

Jáminton Campaz, a forward for Rosario Central, was one of the players most affected by fan frustration after the goalless draw and subsequent 4-3 penalty shootout loss in Vancouver. Although Campaz scored his penalty, his missed chance in extra time sparked criticism that escalated into threats on social media, including against one of his daughters.

What happened during the match against Switzerland?

Colombia and Switzerland played to a 0-0 draw after 120 minutes, but the Swiss prevailed 4-3 in the penalty shootout. Campaz had one of the clearest chances to break the deadlock in extra time but failed to convert. Despite this, he successfully executed his penalty in the shootout.

Why are the threats unacceptable?

The FCF expressed its support for the player, his family, and the rest of the Colombian delegation. It emphasized that no athlete should be subjected to threats or intimidation for representing their country in an international competition. "Football should be a space for unity, respect, and hope, never a stage for hatred, intimidation, or violence," the Federation stated.

What did Jáminton Campaz say?

Campaz himself broke his silence with a message on his social media. Without going into details about the threats, he urged that sports should not be used to justify violence. "We can think differently, feel frustration or sadness, but no passion justifies hatred and living in fear," wrote the native of Tumaco, Nariño, who thanked the support received during the World Cup and assured that he always defended his country's jersey with commitment and pride.

Colombia, coming off a 3-0 victory over Australia on November 19, 2025, now seeks to regain composure and focus on its future in international football.
