Following Amaranto Perea’s departure after the 2026 World Cup, Néstor Lorenzo is initiating the search for his next technical assistant. Perea now serves as the head coach at Independiente Medellín, taking over from his previous role with Colombia's national team.
The official appointment is expected to occur by August and September. Colombia’s national team has a scheduled friendly match series during FIFA dates between September 21 and October 6. The candidates for this position remain undisclosed; however, the name of Radamel Falcao García has recently been mentioned as a potential addition to Néstor Lorenzo's assistant coaching staff.
Falcao is currently without a club after leaving Millonarios, despite not officially announcing his retirement from professional football. Although still on ESPN’s commentary team, he demonstrated extensive knowledge in this capacity and is considered for another role with the national team. According to Sebastián Vargas of Caracol Radio, Néstor Lorenzo has expressed strong interest in having Falcao as an assistant and may propose his inclusion during discussions at the Colombian Football Federation.
Given his extensive experience as a player, Falcao’s relationship with all current players is exceptional, and he could be a significant asset to the team. His involvement in monitoring Colombia's performance during the 2026 World Cup led him to identify areas for improvement.
Despite being historically the top goalscorer for the Colombian national team, Falcao faces challenges due to tax implications if returning to Millonarios after his six-month overseas stint with a new club. His contract ended in June, and comments from Enrique Camacho, president of Millonarios, stated that a fiscal situation makes another stint primarily unlikely.
The last public appearance by Falcao was on his Instagram, sharing vacation photos taken alongside family in the United States.
