Let's Help Colombia: Mario Yepes Launches Solidarity Initiative
Colombian football will come together for a cause that goes beyond the pitch. On Friday, August 21, the El Campín stadium in Bogotá will host a charity match where several legends of the national team will come together to help families and communities affected by the 7.4-magnitude earthquake that hit the country on August 10.
Who's participating?
The initiative, called ‘Let's Help Colombia’, is led by former footballer Mario Alberto Yepes, who aims to bring together fans, families, players, businesses, and citizens around the sport to contribute to the recovery of the areas most affected by the emergency. So far, the organizers have not officially confirmed which former players will participate in the match, but the expectation grows as the possibility of seeing some of the figures who made history with the Colombian national team and in important international clubs on the same pitch increases.
What's the goal?
Yepes explained that this time the goal will not be to win a trophy or get a classification, but to use football as a tool to help those who need it most. “This time we won't play for three points, for a classification, for a title or for a cup. We'll play for the most important title: helping Colombia to get back on its feet,” said the former defender in a video posted on Instagram.
How can you help?
The event aims to become a space of national unity and, at the same time, an opportunity to raise resources that will allow supporting the communities that face the consequences of the earthquake and that now have the difficult process of reconstruction ahead of them. The invitation is for Colombians to join this initiative and accompany from the stands a day in which the sporting result will be the least important.
What about ticket prices?
The prices of the tickets for the charity match depend on the location within the El Campín stadium and range from $25,000 to $50,000. The tickets will be available through TuBoleta.
The Colombian National Team's current situation
The Colombian National Team is currently in first place in the 2026 World Cup classification, with 7 points obtained in 3 games, and a streak of 3 wins and 2 draws in their last 5 games. The team leads the classification with a 2-point advantage over Portugal. In their last game, on July 7, the Colombian National Team drew 0-0 with Switzerland.
What's next?
The ‘Let's Help Colombia’ initiative aims to be a space of national unity and an opportunity to raise resources that will allow supporting the communities affected by the earthquake. The event will take place on Friday, August 21, at the El Campín stadium in Bogotá.
