The Colombia national team is preparing for a new cycle under Néstor Lorenzo, who will continue to lead the team until 2030. The Argentine coach received the support of the Colombian Football Federation after the elimination in the 2026 World Cup, but his continuity also comes with the expectation of making adjustments to a team that needs to renew some of its structures. Lorenzo was questioned after the elimination against Switzerland in the quarterfinals, especially for maintaining a base of players who came from the 2024 Copa América and the Eliminatorias. In that context, versions began to emerge about the decisions that the coach would be preparing to transform the Tricolor in the face of the next world cycle. One of the main novelties would be related to the arrival of a new assistant coach. According to information reported in the program of Hernán Peláez and Martín de Francisco, the Argentine José María Bazán appears as one of the candidates to join Lorenzo's working team. Bazán, 54 years old, has developed most of his career as an assistant coach and has experience in clubs like FC Dallas, Club Tijuana, Orlando City, Pumas UNAM and Audax Italiano. His possible arrival would represent a change in the structure of the coaching staff to face the process that would have as its objective the 2030 World Cup. The second decision would be even more significant and would be related to James Rodríguez. According to the versions known, Lorenzo would have asked for greater autonomy after the renewal of his contract and would have planned to reduce the protagonism of the midfielder progressively. The idea, according to what was stated in the program of Pélaez and De Francisco, would be that James leaves being the central figure of the team and that the Colombia national team advances towards a model in which the dependence on the traditional figure of the '10' disappears. This would not necessarily mean an immediate departure of James from the call-ups. The version points to a progressive transition, in which other footballers can assume responsibilities within the team. That change would also open the door for other players to gain more prominence, such as Luis Díaz, Jhon Durán, Jhon Arias, Richard Ríos, Yáser Asprilla, Jáminton Campaz, Kevin Mantilla and Óscar Cortés, names that could have a more important role in the new process. The renewal would not be limited to James' role. The new cycle could also accelerate the replacement of several historical references who during the last years had a significant weight in the Colombian vest. Players like David Ospina, Santiago Arias, Juan Fernando Quintero, in addition to James, represent a generation that accompanied most of the recent processes, and the eventual reduction of their protagonism obliges to build new leaderships within the team. In that scenario, Luis Díaz appears as one of the main candidates to assume a still greater responsibility. Also, players like Jhon Arias, Richard Ríos, Gabriel Puerta, Jhon Jader Durán and Daniel Muñoz, who combine international experience with an age that would allow them to become references during the path to 2030.
